I took a few zero days at my home in San Diego after leaving the trail due to a heatwave, then returned to Hikertown in my car, ready to hike onward, planning to eventually reach Walker Pass in a week or so.
From PCT mile 517.6 to 517.6 Total: 0.0 miles 4/30
After I got home I repacked my backpack and added new Pop-Tarts and Cosmic Brownies to replace my depleted supply. I also mailed out several postcards for Storytime. So at least I did something useful besides surf the internet and sort through my photos of the hike.

Three days later, when I was certain that the deadly heatwave was over, I headed north in my car to Hikertown. I had checked earlier, and for a small fee they let me park my car right in the main yard, where it would be safe. I also decided to camp in the comfort of my camperized Rav4, rather than one of the Hikertown buildings. I was used to it, and slept better because of it.

I hung out that evening at the picnic table, but there weren’t many hikers there that day. When it got cold I retired to my car and read my book in peace. I wanted to wake up early, as tomorrow was a seventeen mile day, my longest yet on this hike. I crossed my fingers and hoped that the weather forecast was correct, that the heatwave was truly broken and that it would be in the seventies tomorrow, and then I fell asleep. It felt good to be back on the trail.
